Basarab Nicolescu - Biographical Notes

1942: Born on the 25th of March, 1942 at Ploiesti, Romania. Parents: Anton Nicolescu (born in 1916, deceased in 1992) and Anghelichi Anastasiadis (born in 1922, deceased in 2007). Anton Nicolescu was prisoner of war in Russian camps from November 1942 till May 1948.

1956 - 1960: Studies at Highschool "Ion Luca Caragiale", Ploiesti, Romania. 1st prize at National Mathematics Contests and National Contests of Romanian Literature.

1960: Baccalaureate, Ploiesti, Romania. Graduation chief-leader.

1959: Gold medal at the First International Mathematics Olympiad, Brasov, Romania.

1960 - 1964: Studies at the Faculty of Physics, University of Bucharest. Bachelor - Theory of fields and Elementary Particles.

1965: Diploma Thesis: Yang-Mills fields and self-interaction of vectorial fields, under the coordination of Professor Constantin Eftimiu. Graduation chief-leader.

1965 - 1968: Assistant Professor at the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Physics.

1966: 1st marriage at Piatra Neamtz (Romania) with Gabriela Nani. Child : Bogdan Andrei (born in 1967). Divorced in 1975.

1968 - 1969: Grant of the French Government, University Paris VI. Basarab Nicolescu has lived in France since 1968.

1969 - 1970: Grant "Joliot-Curie" of the Commissariat of Atomic Energy, University Paris VI.

1970 - 2008: Entered in 1970 at the National Centre of Scientific Research - Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), where he made all his scientific career, as theoretical physicist, from the lowest level till the highest level, till 2008, when he retired from CNRS. He worked at Nuclear Physics Institute, Division Theoretical Physics, Orsay and, later, at Laboratory of Nuclear Physics and High Energies, University Paris VI.

1972: PhD in Physics ("Doctorat d’État ès-Sciences Physiques"), University "Pierre et Marie Curie" (Paris VI), Paris, Contribution to the theoretical study of the pion-nucleon scattering (Contribution à l'étude théorique de la diffusion pion-nucléon), under the coordination of Professor Robert Vinh Mau. Members of the jury: Maurice Lévy, Geoffrey Chew (USA), Elliot Leader (England), and Robert Vinh Mau.

1973: He introduced, in collaboration with the Polish physicist Leszek Lukaszuk (1938-2007) and based on asymptotic theorems, a new concept (Odderon), which later was confirmed in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) and opened a new field in strong interaction physics.

1975: 2nd marriage in Paris with Michelle Moreau. Children: Daria Solange (born in 1975) and Matthieu-Vlad (born in 1981). Michelle Nicolescu deceased on the 28th of October 2005.

1976: Obtained French nationality (decree of naturalization no 12-7605033 of the 4th of March, 1976).

1976 - 1977: Participant as Guest Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, USA.

1977: Guest Scientist at Brown University, USA.

1979: Senior Visiting Scientist at the University of London.

1986: Animator and author of working documents of the Venice Symposium "Science confronted to the borders of science- the Prologue of our cultural past" ("La science face aux confins de la connaissance - Le Prologue de notre passé culturel") organized by UNESCO in collaboration with Cini Foundation. The "Venice Declaration" was written by Basarab Nicolescu and adopted by 17 personalities of the scientific and cultural world present at this symposium.

1986: Loss of Romanian nationality by presidential decree no 65 of the 21st of April 1986. Romanian nationality reattributed in 1999.

1986: Silver Medal of the French Academy for the book Nous, la particule et le monde (Us, the particle and the world). The same book was selected by "Universalia 1986" (Encyclopaedia Universalis Editions).

1987: President-founder of the International Centre of Transdisciplinary Research and Studies (Centre International de Recherches et Études Transdisciplinaires (CIRET)), ONG (Association law of 1901) including 165 transdisciplinary researchers from 26 countries. 1987: The American-Romanian Academy Award, USA

1991: Co-founder with René Berger of the Reflection Group on Transdisciplinarity with UNESCO, made up of 16 personalities of the scientific and cultural world. This group was conceived as a group of reflection on the main orientations of transdisciplinary activity at international level as a relay between the different transdisciplinary groups and associations and international institutions such as ONU and UNESCO. GRT-UNESCO organized several meetings:

- 1991 - Congress Science et Tradition : perspectives transdisciplinaires, ouvertures vers le XXIe siècle (Science and Tradition : transdisciplinary perspectives, ways to the XXIst century), UNESCO, Paris ;

- 1993 – Meeting of GRT-UNESCO in Venice, where the priorities of the transdisciplinary action for the next decade are set up and the idea of a first world congress of transdisciplinary researchers is launched.

- 1994 – First World Congress of Transdisciplinarity - Convento da Arrábida, Portugal, 2nd-7th of November, 1994.

This congress was co-organized by UNESCO National Commission in Portugal, GRT- UNESCO and the International University of Lisbon. It was carried out under the patronage of the President of the Portuguese Republic Mário Soares, of UNESCO, of the General Secretary of the Council of Europe and of CIRET. 76 personalities of 17 countries participated in this conference. The participants at the congress adopted a Charter of Transdisciplinarity, whose project was drawn up by Lima de Freitas, Edgar Morin and Basarab Nicolescu.

1992: Benjamin Franklin Award for Best History Book, USA, for the book Science, Meaning and Evolution - The Cosmology of Jakob Boehme.

External expert at the annual session at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Basarab Nicolescu participates, in the presence of Pope John-Paul 2nd at the ceremony of closing of Galileo Galilei Trial.

1993: Prize of the Writers' Union of Romania.

1995 - 1997: Project CIRET – UNESCO Transdisciplinary evolution of the University/ Évolution transdisciplinaire de l'Université, included in UNESCO Programme 28 C/5, in collaboration with Division of Arts and Cultural Life.
This project was discussed at the International Congress What University for Tomorrow ? Towards a Transdisciplinary Evolution of the University, Ascona - Monte Verità, 1997, sponsored by UNESCO and by the Government of Ticino.
The participants, amongst who were three UNESCO personalities, adopted a Declaration and a series of recommendations which were followed by important actions in Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Canada and in France.

1996 - 2002: Professor at the School of Political Studies/ École d'Études Politiques RANDA, Barcelona, Spain.

1996: Founder and director of the « Transdisciplinarity » series, Rocher Publishing House, Monaco.

1998: International Workshop "Pomeron and Odderon in Theory and Experiment", Heidelberg, Germany, March 1998, dedicated​ to the study of the Odderon. Basarab Nicolescu gave the opening talk at this meeting.

2005: The RIKEN BNL Research Center International Workshop "Odderon Searches at RHIC", organized by Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY, USA, in September 2005, was dedicated to the study of experimental searches for the Odderon. Basarab Nicolescu gave the opening talk of this meeting.

2006: Citizen of Honour of the city of Iasi, Romania.

The great-grandfather of Basarab Nicolescu, Andrei Nicolescu-Pacureti (1866-1925), was Mayor of the village and member of the Senate of Romania. HE Jean-Marc Ayrault, Prime Minister of France, invited Basarab Nicolescu to accompany him in his visit of two days in Romania (July 11-12, 2013).
The Academy of Transdisciplinary Learning and Advanced Studies (ATLAS), Texas, USA decided to institute the "Basarab Nicolescu Transdisciplinary Science & Engineering Award". The first prizes will be attributed in 2014.
